Dr. Róisín Commane's research focuses on the drivers of surface-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases in marine and terrestrial ecosystems from the Arctic to the tropics and in urban environments. She is PI on a number of competitive grants from State (NY State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)) and Federal (NASA, NOAA, NSF). She built and operated an airborne Laser-induced fluorescence instrument to measure OH and HO2 as part of her PhD and built and operated mid-IR Cavity enhanced absorption spectrometers to measure CO2 and carbonyl sulfide while at Aerodyne Research. She has operated instruments on towers and various aircraft. She was Co-I on the Harvard QCLS instrument measuring CO2, CH4, N2O and CO in the remote atmosphere on the NASA DC-8 aircraft as part of the NASA EVS2 Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission. ATom was used in many satellite cal/val studies (e.g. Worden et al., 2022, Deeter et al., 2022, Liu et al., 2021). As part of the NASA CARVE (EVS1) and ABoVE programs, she works on understanding carbon dioxide and methane fluxes in the Arctic (e.g. Schiferl et al., 2022, Commane et al., 2017, Zona et al., 2016). She has also started an urban measurement network in the New York Metro area (Commane et al., 2023, Wei et al., 2022) that observed the COVID lockdown (e.g. Tzortiou et al., 2022).
